Day 8- The Whistle Stop

We were pretty tired after the Harding Ice Field, and it was looking like another gloomy, rainy day, so we decided to take a train ride. We drove to Portage and got on the Whistle Stop, a train that went to Spencer Glacier. The train went along the tracks that run from Anchorage to Seward. The train went about 30 minutes and stopped at Spencer Glacier. Some people were rafting from Spencer Glacier down the river, where the train would pick them up on the way back. Others hiked alone to the glacier or took a guided hike to a viewing area. We were talking with the hike guide, about the rain and our soreness, and she suggested that we just stay on the train if we wanted to stay warm and dry- the train goes up to Grandview and then back to pick up the hikers and rafters. We opted for this more wussy option, and loved every minute of it. We rode on the train for about 2 hours, and then were back to pick up the hikers at the glacier. The train ran smooth, the views were incredible, but because of the rain, pictures didn't turn out well so I quickly stopped taking pictures. When the hikers got back on the train and were all wet and chilled, we felt pretty good about our decision. And when the train stopped later to pick up the rafters and they got on completely drenched, we felt even better about ourselves. On the way home, we stopped to eat in Cooper Landing and enjoy the slightly rainy views.
